About me
DR LAUREN POOLE, PHD, MA, BSC(HONS)
Hi, I’m Dr Lauren Poole.
I’m a Masters-Level certified Counsellor with a PhD in maternal mental health. I’m also an experienced Lecturer in Counselling, Yoga Therapist and a mum-of-two, doing my best to consciously raise a family away from my village. I understand the challenges of motherhood from an academic and personal experience.
I recently certified as a Motherhood Studies Practitioner, having completed training with Dr Sophie Brock, a leader in the sociology of motherhood. This course helped me to gain an additional perspective on the sociological challenges mothers face (e.g. pressure to be the ‘perfect mother’), which can sometimes be missing from traditional counselling and psychology approaches. I integrate this knowledge to support mothers to see many of their challenges not as personal failures, but as them doing their best against systemic challenges.
I work in an integrative way, with Person-Centred Therapy at the centre of my work. Whilst counselling technique matters, the research shows that one of the most important aspects of effective therapy is having a strong therapeutic relationship. Holding a safe, non-judgemental space is key. I also integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Psychodynamic Thinking. I support my clients to slow down, connect with their experience and consider ways to bring more joy, authenticity and meaning into their lives.
